MILE HIGH GLIDING, Inc. |
The Mile High Gliding office is a silver colored Airstream trailer (one of two, the one furthest East). There are signs and banners on the fences. Park in the large frontage space just East of the office. |
Unlike a lot of soaring centers in the boondocks, MHG is virtually "in town" in a sizeable City that hosts a State University, and that is renowned for its scenery, hiking, history, and facilities. Here are some advantages:

Transportation
Rental Car: Most national franchises have return outlets in Boulder.
Airport/Resort Shuttle:Companies with desks at DIA go to/from Boulder, home to the University of Colorado, Govt. Labs (NIST, NCAR), hiking, etc.
City Bus:The city is served by the RTD bus system ($1.75 local fare) and the airport can be reached via the 205 ("Heatherwood") bus: Outgoing, stop at 47th & Iris (bus shelter just after curving under Foothills Pkwy overpass), walk another 1/8 mi. NE to Independence Rd., turn R and walk E across RR tracks and 3/4 mi. to MHG; Returning, you will need to walk an extra 3/4 mi. to the other side of the Foothills Pkwy ramp and cross to bus stops on the N side of Iris. The 205 bus stops at the main Boulder bus terminal at 14th & Walnut.
Inter-City and Airport Bus:At the Walnut St. Station in Boulder, connections can be made to the B bus to/from Denver ($2.00 transfer, $4.00 full fare) and the AB SkyRide bus to/from DIA ($8.00 transfer, $11.00 full fare). The trip from DIA to 47th & Iris by bus (AB + 205) takes 1-1/2 hr.
Train and Long-distance Bus Lines: The main Denver RTD bus terminal, at 16th & Market, is just a few blocks from the Amtrak train terminal (17th & Wynkoop) and the Greyhound bus terminal (19th & Curtis).
Taxicab:Companies in Denver include Yellow Cab - "just call 7": 303-777-7777, and Metro Taxi - "just call 3": 303-333-3333. Yellow Cab operates in Boulder as well. Try one of their contractors direct, Keith's Taxi, (303)641-7829 -- he knows the way to the gliderport.
Food & Drink
Boulder is home to
many restaurants
and bars, with ethnic and vegetarian cuisine. As befits a college town
with big student, "hippie", and "yuppie" populations, the choices range
from downright cheap ("the Hill", malls) to decidedly opulent (Pearl
St. Mall). Favorites nearest MHG include:
Vic's Espresso, (1.5 mi.) W at Albertson's Ctr., 30th & Iris. Coffee shop.
Cheers Chinese Restaurant, (1.5 mi.) W at Albertson's Ctr., 30th & Iris.
Murphy's Bar & Grill, (2.5 mi.) W at NW corner of 28th & Iris. Sports Bar. [ 5 ]
Thunderbird BBQ, (3.5 mi.) SW, at NW corner of 28th & Valmont. Ribs to burgers.
Entertainment
We would not presume to list half of what the
Boulder area
offers besides soaring. For that windy day, though, some close-by
places to spend time are:
- The Bookworm used books, (2.5 mi.) SW on 28th, between Iris & Valmont
- Mann 6 Movie theaters, (3.0 mi.) SW at 30th & Pearl.
- Flatirons Public Golf Course, (4.0 mi.) S at 55th & Arapahoe.
